The Pure Street Photography Competition Spotlights Humor and Chance Amid the Ordinary

Founded in 2020, Pure Street Photography celebrates a diverse array of captivating sights and image-makers around the globe. Coincidental timing, uncanny interactions, and moments that are stranger-than-fiction figure prominently in the platforms’s curation.

To support their community, founders Dimpy Bhalotia and Kamal Kumaar Rao launched a grant competition earlier this year, with winners announced this week. Topping the contest is Ayanava Sil’s “Crown of Fire,” which captures the instantaneous chaos during a Diwali celebration as a child dashes with sparkling streaks trailing behind. “It’s a flash of magic caught in time, where light, joy, and imagination come together in one unforgettable frame,” Sil says.

Other finalists include Amy Horowitz’s bizarre photo of an older woman clutching her bag while an enormous snake slithers up to the window where she’s seated. Joanna M. similarly builds curiosity tinged with the absurd as she photographs a proud beagle posing for paparazzi.

See more of the contest’s winners below, and follow Pure Street Photography’s Instagram, a trove of visual wit and chance encounters.

Fake diversity: why hire a non-white DJ when you could just generate one with AI?

The Australian Radio Network has three main brands: KIIS, GOLD and CADA. Across nine stations, there’s one non-white presenter — and she’s a bot.

Thy has been CADA Sydney’s weekday host for six months now. It turns out Thy is an AI voice clone created by ARN and ElevenLabs. [MediaWeek]

Here’s a sample of Thy on CADA. Whoever dropped in the voiceover didn’t really care if you could even hear the voice in the mix. [James Cridland; James Cridland, MP3]

Thy was apparently modeled on the voice of an ARN finance department employee. ARN won’t disclose if the employee was paid for the use of her voice, nor who’s writing the scripts for Thy.

The Carpet posted about Thy as a rumour on 13 April. Stephanie from The Carpet was surprised there was no announcement or biography of CADA’s new 11am–3pm DJ and no social media. [Carpet]

The AFR confirmed Thy was an AI fake shortly after. [AFR, archive]

ARN told shareholders it was “active in creating an inclusive workplace, as recognised in the Diversity Council of Australia’s Inclusive Employer Index.” That index probably doesn’t count faking the diversity with a bot. [ARN, PDF]

ElevenLabs scrambled to post that ARN is “not replacing people” — though it literally is. [ElevenLabs]

It’s not even clear Thy is saving ARN money. [The Carpet]

Last October, Radio Kraków in Poland tried some AI-powered fake-diversity on their OFF radio station just after firing all of OFF’s presenters. That went down about as well as this.

Drift Us by DRIFT Turns Motion Into Meaning at Milan Design Week

Dutch studio DRIFT has long captivated audiences with its kinetic installations, capturing fleeting moments from nature and translating them into immersive, sensory experiences within built environments. At Milan Design Week 2025, artists Lonneke Gordijn and Ralph Nauta did it once again with Drift Us, a robotic installation created in collaboration with Audi that evokes the sensation of wind. Here, visitors weren’t just passive observers – they became the wind itself, activating the work through motion. The installation serves as a symbolic expression of DRIFT and Audi’s shared belief: that true progress is sparked by movement, adaptability, and human connection.

DRIFT’s last appearance at Milan Design Week was in 2006, making their return nearly two decades later all the more exciting. Their reemergence alongside Audi underscores the importance of movement as a central theme for both brands, powered by cutting-edge technology and a deep curiosity for the natural world. “DRIFT and Audi share the vision that innovation comes from moving people,” the artists share. “In our highly complex and demanding world, flexibility and adaptability are key to be frontrunners in technological and at the same time human-centered innovation. In the [Audi] House of Progress you are invited to become a force of change.”

As visitors move through Drift Us, their presence activates the environment. Filament-like bulbs sway in soft, synchronized waves, mimicking the natural motion of a grassy field. The effect is so fluid and organic, it’s easy to forget that robotics power the entire experience. Tranquil and mesmerizing, the installation encourages reflection on how we shape the spaces around us, in turn shaping progress and advancing the future. “Wind is the driving force of evolution and innovation in nature,” DRIFT reflects. “Without movement, there is no progress.”

Was kann da schon passieren?
